The Water Crisis on Gili Meno
Gili Meno Island has been facing a severe clean water crisis since June 2024. This issue began with legal problems involving PT Gerbang NTB Emas (GNE) and PT Berkah Air Laut (BAL).
LIQUID LEGAL DISPUTES
PT BAL is currently under investigation for allegedly using groundwater illegally to supply clean water to the Gili islands. Due to this legal trouble, the water facilities managed by PT BAL and PT GNE have been seized by the court, which means they can no longer provide water to Gili Meno.
In response, the local government tried to introduce a new company, PT Tiara Cipta Nirwana (TCN), from Bali. This company, in partnership with PDAM Amerta Dayan Gunung of North Lombok, uses a method called “Sea Water Reverse Osmosis” (SWRO) to turn seawater into clean water. However, residents of Gili Meno are worried that this method might harm the environment, as it has in Gili Trawangan. Because of these concerns, the new solution has faced opposition.
The crisis has worsened, with high costs of bringing water from mainland Lombok by boat. This has made it difficult for local people to get enough water, and unfortunately many cows – cows are important to the livelihood, culture, and environment of local Indonesian communities – have died due to the lack of water.
It is crucial for the government to act quickly to resolve this crisis and find long-term solutions to ensure Gili Meno has soon a reliable supply of clean water.
